PGY-1 General Pharmacy Practice Residency Program

Description
Huntsville Hospital's PGY-1 Residency in General Pharmacy Practice is a 12-month ASHP-accredited program providing a structured, directed, postgraduate professional practice learning experience. Residents receive training and develop competence in direct patient care, drug information and drug-use policy development and management. Residents serve as an integral part of our ongoing staff development program and present lectures to and serve as mentors for our decentralized staff pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Residents will also precept Doctor of Pharmacy candidates from Auburn University School of Pharmacy and may be asked to present didactic lectures at the university. Each resident completes a major project and presents the results at the annual Southeastern Residency Conference in Athens, Georgia.

Huntsville Hospital and UAB-Health Center occupy over 40 acres in the heart of Huntsville's Medical District. Huntsville Hospital is a 881-bed regional referral center serving a population of more than one million people. The UAB-Health Center consists of approximately 45 medical students and 36 medical residents. Huntsville Hospital and the UAB Medical School operate a modern medical library that is located adjacent to the main Huntsville Hospital facility. Additionally, Huntsville Hospital has a management agreement with Athens-Limestone Hospital and is in the process of building the state’s first new hospital in 30 years in the neighboring community of Madison.

  • Philosophy
    The purpose of Huntsville Hospital's Pharmacy Practice Residency program is to train pharmaceutical care generalists who will be able to provide medication-related services to a broad range of patients in a variety of healthcare settings. Huntsville Hospital's PG-1 Residency in Practice instills the philosophy that pharmacists are responsible and accountable for drug therapy outcomes. To accomplish this goal, our department has developed the following mission statement:

    "The Huntsville Hospital Department of Pharmacy is committed to serving the drug therapy needs of patients and healthcare providers to assure:
    • improvement in patient outcome and quality of life;
    • rational and cost-effective pharmacotherapeutic decisions;
    • efficient utilization of resources in structuring systems and services;
    • safe use of medications."

    The program is flexible and allows the resident to pursue individual interests and goals. Wherever possible, practice experiences are continued throughout the year rather than in individual practice segments. While much learning takes place during the residency program, more emphasis is placed on "doing." Residents are given numerous opportunities to participate in drug therapy management and must take responsibilty for patients' pharmaceutical care on a daily basis.

    Electives
    Elective rotations may be scheduled at the end of the residency year. Residents may choose to repeat one or two required rotations or participate in a medicine sub-speciality experience with a physician as the primary preceptor.
