Three separate community surveys conducted during the past twelve months—two commissioned by Huntsville Hospital and one by Crestwood Medical Center—came to the same conclusion: the majority of the citizens in Madison and western Madison County support Huntsville Hospital to build the hospital in Madison.

The most recent survey conducted by HealthStream Research in June 2007 found that 51% of the people who will be served by the new Madison hospital want Huntsville Hospital to build it, compared to 33% who said Crestwood.

Crestwood Medical Center opened in 1965 as a privately owned, for-profit hospital. Over the years Crestwood has been bought and sold by various out-of-state corporations, including HCA, HealthTrust, Triad, and now, Community Health Systems. It is not unreasonable to expect that Crestwood’s ownership will change again in the future.

On the other hand, Huntsville Hospital is a community-owned, not-for-profit hospital that is 113 years old. • We provided care in the amount of $1.8 million to Madison residents who could not pay for their care in fiscal year 2006.
• We annually provide free sports therapy services and other support for Bob Jones High School ($200,000).

• We provided one-half of the funding for the purchase of a $28,000 cardiac defibrillator for the Madison Fire Department in 2004.
