Pool Therapy
Huntsville Hospital Therapy and Sports Center offers one of the region’s only Pool Therapy programs. Pool Therapy is a low impact alternative to the land rehabilitation and is great for people still having pain or physical limitations. By exercising in our therapeutic heated pool, the natural buoyancy of the water gently lifts pressure off the joints, while strengthening the muscles. The water temperature is approximately 93 degrees and features a walking path, handrails, non-slip steps and hydraulic chair.
Benefits of water
- Reduces stress on joints by 50-75 percent
- Raises body temperature, which increases circulation
- Eases stiffness
- Provides greater resistance than air
- Helps build muscle strength
- Provides low impact alternative
- Improves balance and coordination
- Decreases muscle spasms
- Increases metabolic rate
Lymphedema Treatment Program
For women experiencing problems with lymphedema, swelling that sometimes occurs in the arm after breast surgery, our therapists offer a treatment program called Manual Lymph Drainage. Our physical therapists, who are specially trained in lymphedema management, can control the swelling with therapeutic massage, compression bandages and education for self-care techniques.
Anodyne Therapy
Peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage resulting from poor blood flow to nerves in the feet, legs and hands. This disorder is often painful and is one of the most common complications of diabetes, but may also be caused by circulatory problems, medications, chemotherapy, alcohol, AIDS and other unknown causes. Huntsville Hospital offers Anodyne Therapy to increase circulation and temporarily reduce pain in the area it is applied. Therapy sessions may also include stretching and strengthening exercises, dynamic and static balance exercises, as well as massage and other therapeutic treatments.
